Somatic Yoga
What to Expect
All sessions are conducted remotely via Zoom and can be provided to clients anywhere in the world.
An average session is about 50 minutes. During the session the client will be guided through a personalized somatic yoga practice.
Sessions require the client to spend the majority of time lying on their backs. There may be options for sitting, standing and prone positions depending on client objectives.
A non-stick mat or yoga rug is recommended. Clients should also have a blanket or two available for support. A quiet space free of distraction is best for optimal client experience.
What is Somatics and Sensory-Motor Amnesia?
Somatic defined - of, relating to, or affecting the body.
Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) as defined by Thomas Hanna - during the course of life our sensory-motor systems respond to daily stressors and trauma with specific muscular reflexes. These repeatedly triggered reflexes, create habitual muscular contractions which we are no longer able to relax. This state of constriction (or trapped energy) leads to dis-ease, soreness, stiffness and restricted range of motion. This is Sensory-Motor Amnesia.
Somatic yoga exercises allow the body to avoid further SMA and to reverse (unlearn) existing SMA while also providing a peaceful body awareness practice.
Somatic yoga is particularly helpful for individuals who are concerned with the aging process, recovering from injuries, seeking better spinal alignment and reduction of stress and anxiety.
